The walk along the promenade between Qajjenza and Birżebbuġa can be very pleasant on a sunny day, with the view across the bay towards Delimara and with distant Fort St Lucien dominating the coast road to Marsaxlokk.

However, there is a problem that looms regularly.

There are three large manhole covers situated along the promenade. When it has rained, these covers lift under the pressure of water beneath and spew large quantities of human faeces and lavatory paper all over the promenade. The smell is overpowering.

I cannot imagine a greater deterrent to repeat tourism! I am a Maltese citizen, intensely proud of my citizenship, and I want to see Malta prosper.

The situation outlined above needs urgent attention - certainly before the start of the next tourist season.

There is, of course, a simple solution. Lock the manhole covers in position to stop the egress of filth and give the long-suffering residents on the promenade a break!
