Isabelle Borg’s paintings representing Malta in Paris
Exhibiting her landscapes in Paris, Isabelle Borg is one of three female artists showing their perceptions of three countries united by our common sea – alongside Lucy Pisani, born in Tunisia and of Maltese origin, who is the “doyenne” of Franco-Maltese artists coming from the southern shores of the Mediterranean, and Bénédite de la Roncière, who lives in Provence, exhibiting her representation of French Mediterranean countryside. Together the three women create the link that binds Malta to France and to the North African countries, which harboured so many Maltese migrants in the past.
The exhibition, Paysages, opens on Monday at the Embassy of Malta in France, hosted by Ambassador Vicki Ann Cremona.
Malta will also be represented in Paris by Ms Borg’s painting on December 16, at the traditional reception that the Association Bienvenue en France gives in conjunction with the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. This year, on the occasion of the French Presidency of the European Union, Bienvenue en France has invited all member states to participate with works of art.
Ms Borg is one of Malta’s best known artists and teaches art at the University of Malta. Her paintings in oils showing in Paris were inspired by views of Malta where the intense presence of nature still overpowers. The bold use of colour and line, evoking an understanding of the landscape, refer to drawings from direct observation.
In December she is opening her solo exhibition Strange Cargo at the Museum of Fine Arts and participating in group exhibitions Reflections of an Island (FAA) at Casino Maltese, Valletta, and Gallery G – The First Five Years, Lija.
