A young man was yesterday held in preventative custody after being charged with raping his 15-year-old former girlfriend in his car.

The arraignment, which lasted just a few minutes, saw him remanded in custody without the defence lawyer asking for bail and a bewildered 25-year-old Stephen Cilia looking at his lawyer to find out what was going to become of him. Walking into court, splattered with concrete, he denied raping the girl.

Mr Cilia was also charged before Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera with defiling the girl, threatening her and offending public morals.

Lawyer Mark Busuttil appeared for Mr Cilia.
