Zammit leaves it to 2nd session to clinch victory
Borg makes 140 clearance
Simon Zammit, of Jesmond Sports Club, has won the second ranking tournament of the season organised by the Malta Billiards and Snooker Association (MBSA).
In front of a sizeable crowd at Ħamrun's 147 Snooker Hall he beat Mario Brincat, of Ħamrun Liberty Sports Club, 5-3 in the final.
Zammit won the first frame 84-10 helped by a break of 46.
But Brincat showed some great form to win the next three, including breaks of 75 and 94 to go 3-1 up at the mid-session interval.
However, when play resumed, Zammit used all his experience to claim four frames in a row for a 5-3 win with breaks of 53 and 71 in the last two frames.
After the match, Joe Caruana Curran, association president, presented the trophies to the two finalists. Highest break of the tournament was compiled by Malta champion Alex Borg who potted a superb 140 clearance in his quarter-final against Frans Mintoff.
In the MBSA provisional ranking list, Borg still leads with 3,050 points followed by Zammit, 2,350, and Duncan Bezzina, 2,150.
Meanwhile, the national championship gets underway this week with the first matches from all divisions. In all, 144 players are taking part in different categories.
The Premier Division will be contested by 20 players. Borg will be trying to win the title for the seventh consecutive year.
