Baumann: The German FA (DFB) has opened an investigation after Werder Bremen captain Frank Baumann was hit by a mobile phone battery thrown from the crowd during Sunday's 2-1 defeat away to Hamburg SV. Baumann was hit on the head while Werder were celebrating their first half equaliser and the DFB said it was looking into the incident.

Higuita: Eccentric Colombian goalkeeper Rene Higuita, still playing first division football at the age of 42, made another spectacular blunder during Pereira's 3-0 defeat at America at the weekend. America kicked off the semi-final group stage of the Clausura championship with a 3-0 win over Pereira but Higuita's worst moment came in the last minute when he rushed out of his penalty area towards the halfway line, tried to head the ball away, missed and allowed Paulo Cesar Arango to score into an empty net.

Reveillere: Olympique Lyon and France defender Anthony Reveillere will be out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Motor racing: Briton David Coulthard, who retired as a Formula One driver earlier this month, will start a new career with former team boss Eddie Jordan next season as pundits for BBC television. The BBC, who are taking over Formula One coverage from rivals ITV, said Jonathan Legard will join former racer Martin Brundle in the commentary box.

Cycling: Austrian Bernhard Kohl, who tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug during the Tour de France, was given a two-year ban by the Austrian Anti-Doping Agency. Kohl, the Tour's best climber this year and third overall, tested positive for the new generation of erythropoietin, CERA, in retroactive tests earlier this year.

Rugby: Wales winger Shane Williams was named the International Rugby Board's player of the year at an awards ceremony in London. The 31-year-old Ospreys player, a prolific tryscorer in Wales's victorious Six Nations grand slam campaign, is the first Welshman to win the award, first given in 2001.

Formula One: Switzerland's Sebastien Buemi, 20, is likely to replace Germany's Sebastian Vettel at Toro Rosso next season. Vettel, 21, has moved on to the main Red Bull Racing team following the retirement of David Coulthard and several drivers are queueing up to take his place at the race-winning team.
