Farmers anxious about EU funds
Nationalist MP Philip Mifsud has urged the Malta Environment and Planning Authority chairman to prioritise any pending farm or field improvement applications so farmers could apply for EU funds.
Mr Mifsud said several farmers were concerned they could lose the funding because they did not have the necessary permits in hand.
He has written to chairman Austin Walker reminding him that on November 12, the Rural Affairs Ministry had issued a call for applications for farmers to receive EU assistance.
The EU has made available €13.5 million, of which each farmer can receive a maximum of €75,000. Applications, which must include the development permit, have to be submitted by January 12.

Do you think that any government in any country will allow its agriculture sector to be done away with and depend solely on imports?
NO GOVERNMENT OR COUNTRY WOULD EVER DO THAT

To Whom It May Concern:
Do you sincerely believe that farming is nowadays feasible or even viable in Malta?
Farming was only viable when local farmers were protected by the Government and importation was restricted, but nowadays since we are in the EU, it makes more sense to import because the prices are cheaper and the quality is outstanding.
Unfortunately, the local farmer can never compete with our European counterparts, for many obvious reasons, one being the economies of scale.
Therefore it is wiser to import than produce locally.
However, I have a suspicion that most of the present applications for cow/pig farms are nothing but a pretext for a future "change of use", because when the time comes, these farmers will claim that this type of business is no longer profitable and then claim to apply for a "change of use" to convert the once cow/pig farms into EXCLUSIVE VILLAS ! ! !
We all live in Malta, and know what is actually happening ! ! !
It is the “modus operandi” of doing things in Malta ! ! !
MEPA should keep its eyes wide open for these abuses.
