Questions on departure tax refund policy
I have read with interest the comments on the letters page regarding refund of the departure tax with particular reference to Ryanair, which seems to be the main recipient of criticism in this regard. I would be interested to learn what is the situation regarding departure tax relating to flights booked in advance. We booked a flight in February to travel to the UK on December 4 with Air Malta, and as a result of the publicity regarding Ryanair we contacted Air Malta for clarification but so far have received no reply. We must have paid the departure tax relevant at that time but this is not clear as all the taxes are combined. My feeling is that it is not only Ryanair who have questions to answer. Ryanair have done this, so what is the Air Malta policy in regard to refunds?

@Brian Lee
I also booked a flight in May with Air Malta to go in December. I paid the tax which was confirmed by one of the Air Malta staff in their Valletta office. She told me to keep the boarding pass stubs and when I return to Malta to go to their office and they will refund the tax then.

Dear Brian.
Again are we all not directing our queries to who is exactly tasked with refunding departure tax through the appropriate channels?For Ryanair,as with all the airlines,are merely acting as tax collectors on behalf of the government and that surely this departure tax is to be onpassed to the government.For Ryanair do not keep any monies collected through the imposition of this tax and I have asked the CAA to clarify this issue-but will not hold my breath until I receive an answer.So who actually holds the money collected against this departure tax?

If it's of any help, in October I booked flights to Milan for March09, and the departure tax was not included in the total price.
