The older I get the more I find it difficult to understand what is happening in this world.

The world economy is in recession. Most central banks have reduced interest rates to encourage people to spend more. It is not worth saving money because bank interest is too low. What happened to the slogan: Save, Save, Save.

In Somalia well-armed gangsters hijack all kinds of ships and hold them to ransom for huge amounts of money. Money is paid for the release of merchandise and hostages. This happens in spite of strict worldwide money laundering laws. Military alliances, Nato, the UN, etc. cannot stop this lawlessness. In the good old Victorian days a European country would colonise such a country and bring order to the area.

In Italy, police in Genoa were suspended for trying to stop the destruction and arson of property during a G8 conference!

When civil unrest or natural disasters hit a region substantial help is rushed to these countries. Most of the supplies are provided by the US (as seen on the labelling on the parcels). Once the area becomes more habitable these same people will throng the streets demonstrating and shouting abuse at the same country that helped them to recover.

Chester Bowles once said that government is too big and important to be left to the politicians.
