Sleeping rough on Valletta's streets

Despite the gale-force winds and sporadic showers, Valletta's Republic Street became a makeshift bedroom this weekend.

In the biggest YMCA Malta fundraising event of the year, a number of people took part in YMCA Homeless Personalities 2008, roughing it and sleeping out in the street.

Some of them even locked themselves in a cage to raise money for the 300 homeless people. The personalities taking part include Andrea Cassar, DJ Toby, Kristina Casolani, Audrey Harrison, Owen Bonnici, Helena Dalli, Nikita Alamango, Ronald Briffa and Gordon Bonello.

An impressive number of second-hand books were also sold. The event, which started last Friday, ends today at noon.

People may make donations in Republic Street, or via SMS 5061 8088 to donate €4.66 or 5061 9212 to donate €11.65.
