Man 72, held up, robbed
A 72-year-old man was assaulted and robbed as he was driving his car into a garage last night, the police said.
The incident allegedly happened at about 11.15 p.m. in Triq ir-Rghajja, Fgura.
The police said that according to preliminary investigations, as the man was driving his car into a garage, three hooded men, one of them armed, entered the garage, tied him up and demanded cash.
They escaped with €300 in cash and jewellery whose value does not exceed €1,500. The man suffered some injuries and was seen by a doctor.
Magistrate Myriam Hayman has appointed experts to help her in an inquiry.
Police investigations are continuing.

@ Albert Fenech, whilst agreeing with you wholeheartedly I would like to add a strict and I mean strict controlled police presence on foot.If need be these would have to have a monitoring unit so that the police management would know where they are at all times, only then would a criminal be deterred.Everyone can see a car coming and it is easy to hide from sight of an officer in a car.

Senior citezens violating small children
young men terrozing senior citezens
where are we getting to??????????
solutions:
make the perpetrators work in prison to pay the moral and material damages.
put them in chains to fix the raods and other public maintenance. the money saved will pay the victims.
this should be their sentence.
the police force needs to shape up; I am sure most of our boys in blue are willing as they have children as well as grandparents.
the legal system(or lack of it) needs to back up the hard work of our officers.
neighbours keep out a watch and report suspect movements

Society has gone too soft with criminals, make an example of these thugs when / if they are caught. Give them the maximimum sentence available. No ifs and no buts.

@ Neal Debono
Solutions: Make the punishment fit the crime:
Rob or mug a 70yr old = 70 months in prison
Actually inflict injury = double punishment to 140 months in prison.
Armed with knife, gun, baton or other weapon = triple punishment to 210 months in prison.
Plea of being drunk or needing money to support drugs = an extra one year in prison.
Sentence to be consecutive not concurrent.

I lived in the UK the majority of my life and i must say these crimes were so common and all drug related. The only way to combat these crimes is to look into the sources being drugs, lack of working opportunities, low pay and a high cost of living.

I'll tell you what I would do Mr. Neal Debono. I would restore policemen to their proper policing duties instead of pretending to answer telephone calls in mostly defunct and dirty police stations. I would equip a very modern and efficient police mobile unit with a strong local network that would work on a 24-hour basis. I would pass Laws that will ensure stronger Court sentences (instead of the current and laughable suspended sentences, an escape that our Courts are mostly using). So Malta has "low" criminality (in your opinion) compared to EU countries. That is because enforcement is a total farce and everybody does exactly as they please unless they blot their copybook with something over-and-above the norm. By Mr. Debono's logic we should dismantle the Police and the Law Courts and let things sort themselves out!

@ Vincent Galea,
I think that you expressed the sentiments of all decent and law abiding citizens anywhere!
@ Albert Fenech,
I appreciate that your statement is made out of anger for the fact that an old man has been attacked by not one. but three desperate and armed man, such brute force is normally reserved for a bank robbery rather than an old and innocent old man! Unfortunately such crime happens all over the world, but when it happens closer to home, it hits you much harder and it is quite normal to vent out your frustrations on the law and order of any country !
@Neal Debono.
Grow up!

@ Albert Fenech
What would you do? Place a policeman near every older citizen's house? What is the rate of criminality in Malta compared to most of the E.U. countries?
Do not patronize give solutions

In a society that now evolves around money, drinks, drugs, sex unlimited, and whatever else we selflishly look to, we have forgotten those of wisdom.
Becoming elderly used to be considered a sign of reverence and distinction To-day 's
young generation looks upon you as a nuisance.
Perhaps these robbers wanted this man to stay home behind locked doors on a Saturday night and kept warm on a wintry night !!
One day you will be old too.......if you are lucky.

Desperate times indeed. Three armed and hooded thugs terrify a 72-year-old man and make off with a miserable sum that is less that 2,000 euros. This country has really reached the pits of low morality. Let's hope the robbers get the punishment they really deserve (unlikely). The Government should conduct a survey of the public's credibility perception of our forces of Law and Order (Police and Law Courts). The result will not shock the country because most of us will know what it will be. But it may shake the forces of Law and Order.
