Gozo College Nadur Primary school 'Dun Salv Vella' recently organised a Healthy Lifestyle Day as part of the school's policy of promoting healthy habits in which all the school pupils, teaching and non-teaching staff and around 50 parent-volunteers participated.
In the morning, all children were provided a healthy breakfast consisting of fresh milk and cereal. The pupils then undertook class-based tasks such as building up food pyramids, selecting and matching healthy habits with food, and creating artwork. They also performed warm-up and physical exercises in the school playground.
Meanwhile, in the assembly hall, parent volunteers prepared wholemeal sandwiches with fresh vegetables, tuna or cheese, and fruit salads for the children.
This was followed up by two walks. The younger children went to the panoramic Gnien il-Kunsill while the older classes took a different route towards rural Nadur and Dahlet Qorrot valley. Immersed in the natural beauty of Nadur valley and the Gozo Channel views, all children, parents and teachers enjoyed their delicious sandwiches, fruit salads and water.
The day helped the school achieve two goals. The class-based activities focused attention on the school's current food guidelines which emphasise that children should have a diet rich in vegetables, fruits and wholegrains, and low in saturated fat and sugar.
The physical activities stressed the importance of fitness, warm-up exercises, countryside and village walks and non-competitive team games.
The activities were filmed by Education Channel 22 to be featured on its Rubini programme.
