The effects of climate change and global warming was the subject of an awareness campaign that HSBC staff ran during the summer months at 32 summer schools, reaching over 1,120 children in government and private schools and children of HSBC staff.
The campaign culminated in a recycling craft competition for the children. Recycling of waste, and its importance in the care of the environment was one of the subjects dealt with during the presentations. The aim of the competition was to award the best craft created from recycled material.
The competition was held for two categories of children, those aged from five to eight and those aged from nine to 12. Items were judged for their creativity, functionality and use of recycled material. All 22 entries submitted by children were awarded vouchers for educational toys.
"Every person who contributes, in a small or big way, to care for the environment is a winner," said Sally Robson, HSBC's chief operating officer and chairperson of the HSBC Cares For The Environment Fund. "These creations go a long way to show that by recycling material, we do not only reduce the waste stream which has a detrimental impact on our environment, but we can also add value by using it as a resource for the creation of beautiful and functional items," she said.
"For business-minded adults, recycling of waste is a fast-growing industry which is gaining popularity in a world that is becoming more conscious of its negative impact on the environment," added Ms Robson.
