A magistrate yesterday denied bail to "untrustworthy" Alfred Bugeja, Il-Porporina, accused of theft but already out on bail for a number of other criminal cases.

The 52-year-old was arraigned together with 23-year-old Clive Agius and charged with stealing under €2,239 and other objects from a van and a warehouse in Santa Venera on Wednesday.

He claimed, as he has done in previous court sittings, that he has been suffering from psychiatric problems for the past few years and asked that if remanded in custody he be taken to Mount Carmel Hospital.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli took into consideration his criminal record, the fact that he was already out on bail on other cases and that he was not a trustworthy person.

Both accused were remanded in custody.

Police Inspectors Anthony Portelli and Robert Vella prosecuted.

Lawyer Arthur Azzopardi appeared for Mr Bugeja.

Lawyer Joseph Giglio appeared for Mr Agius.
