The ongoing crackdown on encroached public land is to be applauded. However, what is the difference between extra tables and chairs outside a cafeteria or restaurant and the so-called car park attendants? I am sure that readers agree that the taking over of public land by such individuals is also in breach of the law.

These open spaces should be made freely available to all motorists, now that the redevelopment of Tower Road in Sliema has taken up a fair amount of parking spaces. Could the Department of Land enlighten us as to why these individuals are above the law?
