Senglea wins European regional awards

The Senglea council is one of the 14 regional winners in the Regional Champions Awards 2008 of the European Union’s Committee of the Regions.

The awards aim to identify and showcase the very best in regional innovation and best practices throughout EU regions, highlighting projects that can serve as examples to other regions.

Senglea won with a project on intercultural dialogue. A total of 250 proposals were submitted from councils in 26 EU member states.

Local Councils Association vice-president Claudette Abela-Baldacchino described Senglea’s award was an honour for all Maltese and Gozitan councils.

This is music to my ears how wonderful Senglea (Isla) being acknowledged, with such a prestigious Award by the European Union Committee of Regions. What a great honor for the whole of Malta and Gozo. This is a boost for the Local Council and all people of this Historical City. I do hope that The Times of Malta would do a feature into the Project that has bought such an award.

I notice that in this article the unconquered city is being referred to as SENGLEA and not as Isla.And this is how it should be. Senglea is its proper name and I can't understand how the decision to call Senglea Isla was taken. I understand that the council left no stone unturned to refer to Senglea by its proper name but as usual the so called experts got their way. in defiance I make it a point to use 'Senglea' and not Isla(!) whenever I refer to the city.
