A place of worship may not be the usual venue of choice for an exhibition of paintings but Anna Nightingale wanted to use her art to celebrate the restoration of the Tal-Pilar chapel in West Street, Valletta.

Entitled Angels Fall First, Ms Nightingale's exhibition of semi-abstract works is in fact being held at Tal-Pilar, which was recently opened after extensive restoration and conservation works carried out between 1989 and 1999. The chapel was officially handed over to Heritage Malta in November last year.

This is not the first time Tal-Pilar is hosting an exhibition. During this year's Notte Bianca, a display of ecclesiastical silver pieces from the national collection was put on show. Now, Ms Nightingale's works are gracing the sacred surroundings.

Entering the chapel, a vision of gold hits visitors. A singular painting with a luminous gold leaf background titled 3.59 a.m. has been raised on the pulpit directly facing the chapel's main doorway - a symbolic representation of a titular altarpiece.

The other works on display have strong atmospheric qualities. Generally, the bottom half of the paintings are shrouded in dark hues, which rise into light towards the topmost section of the work of art.

Although distinct shapes and forms cannot be distinguished in Ms Nightingale's works, the natural environs seem to constitute her point of departure. In fact, she has been inspired by Malta's beauty and heritage ever since her first visit at age seven.

The exhibition remains open until November 30. The chapel's opening hours are: Monday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Tuesdays to Fridays 4.30 to 6.30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4.30 p.m.
