Maltese officer to join Somalia operations coordinating team

A Maltese officer is to join a Royal Navy team in London coordinating operations to deter piracy off Somalia. He will be working at naval headquarters in Northwood UK, the Foreign Ministry has announced.

The piracy of merchant ships was among subjects discussed yesterday at a meeting in London between British Foreign Secretary David Miliband and Foreign Minister Tonio Borg.

The talks also included bilateral relations, the Euro Arab dialogue, the Union for the Mediterranean, the Middle East peace process, Immigration and EU enlargement.

Mr Miliband expressed his satisfaction for Malta’s contribution in the setting up of the Union for the Mediterranean.

Dr Borg briefed him on the liaison office between the EU and the Arab League, which is to be set up in Malta.

Later in the day, Dr Borg addressed the All Party Parliamentary Group for Malta in the Committee Room of the House of Commons. The topic of the meeting was the Union for the Mediterranean.
