A Danish national yesterday consented to being extradited after a European arrest warrant was issued against him for tax violations, fraud and swindling substantial amounts.
Jesper Lund had already been sentenced for the crimes in Denmark in 2002 but was only asked to serve the sentence this year. In fact, despite having been sentenced, the prison term he received under Danish law does not automatically become effective and the authorities have to send for the convicted person to start serving time.
Magistrate Doreen Clarke ruled that Mr Lund be extradited as he was comfortingly patted on the back by relatives who wiped tears from their eyes.
Mr Lund will be extradited in the coming days.
Senior Counsel to the Republic Donatella Frendo Dimech and lawyer Elaine Rizzo prosecuted.
Lawyers Giannella Caruana Curran and Arthur Azzopardi appeared for Mr Lund.
