New sms service for businesses
VAT-registered people will start receiving an sms to remind them the time had come for them to submit their taxation form.
The messages will initially be general but the aim is for it to be further developed to become more personalised, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said during the project’s launch this morning.
The aim of the service is to increase the efficiency of businesses. More information can be obtained form www.vat.gov.mt.

Very good comment. Traffic should be two-way not one-way.

I doubt it that anyone who is VAT registered really needs reminding by phone to be honest. I'm sure that the relevant forms are reminder enough.
Incidentally, since we are here, how about the Commissioner of Inland Revenue giving his mobile phone number to those people who are owed tax arrears so that they can send him reminders as well?

Nigel, I guess if you didn't want to give someone your mobile number, you cannot really expect them to send you an sms can you?
For those of us who have no problem with giving out our mobile number for this service it's great!

And if one does NOT own a mob 'phone, or alternately does NOT want to divulge it's number----
Good service? not really.

Gee I'm lost for words! Only wish that it would not remain one way traffic...and when we need the VAT department they live up to their mission statement and offer a decent service / assistance to businesses.

How would they know the mobile number to send the sms to if the businessman doesn't give it to them?
Is this another case of big brother getting data from the mobile operators in spite of the data protection act?
