Demolition that exposed the graveyard

It might be of interest to compare this photograph, which we are reproducing in the next issue of Malta at War, with that of the exposed graveyard of the Co-Cathedral of St John carried in The Times on November 15 - it is in fact the same spot.

This part of the block adjacent to the church bordering Merchants Street corner with St Lucia Street, was built up with artistic balconies overlooking the streets.

Michael Cassar tells me the shops were Midland House of German Bros, Paolo Bonnici Depot of Leather and Darmenia's. The area was cleared soon after the end of the last war to reveal the graveyard now forming part of the proposed extension of the cathedral's museum.
