I read with great interest Volker Schwan's letter (November 17).

The possibility of underwater turbines as an alternative source of energy needs to be fully explored and every effort made to tap this technology. Schiller Group of Germany, it would appear, are very advanced in this technology and they are probably backed by huge investment interests.

What many Maltese do not know is that a certain fellow Maltese engineer has been experimenting single-handedly with such or similar technology for well over 20 years. He has devoted the best part of his life to this experiment and I believe he has now reached the patenting stage.

This gentleman's name is Joseph Spiteri Sargent, a good acquaintance of mine since childhood. Some years ago he invited me to view a DVD of his invention and I must say I was impressed. Joseph Muscat, leader of the MLP also viewed this invention not so long ago and his visit was reported in the media.

So, while I wish Schiller good luck in the furtherance of their technological advances, may I suggest it could be worthwhile for our authorities to look no further than our shores to find that such an alternative source of energy may be "made in Malta".
