PM to meet unions GRTU, tomorrow
The Prime Minister will hold separate meetings tomorrow with the trade unions and the GRTU, the Office of the Prime Minister said today.
The trade unions requested the meeting at the end of a demonstration in Valletta on Friday. They said they were seeking a review of the tariffs, or compensation.
The GRTU had also, separately, written to Dr Gonzi seeking the meeting.
Both meetings will discuss the water and electricity tariffs.
Dr Gonzi said yesterday that while the tariffs may be tweaked, he could not have major changes which would encourage waste.
"I want to listen to their suggestions for tariffs which incentivise those who are careful not to waste," Dr Gonzi said about the request for the meetings.

I might guess how the meeting with the unions will end. The Prime Minister has played the unions’ game when they negotiate with the employers.
First his government asked for sky high tariffs, then he would accept a lower tariff, but still ever so higher that the present one.
This; to show us how much he is kind and understanding.
Stop fooling us Dr Gonzi, and start calling a spade a spade.

@ Dr Gonzi,
Whilst reviewieng and listening to opinions is good, I beleive in the governments plan for the next 5 years and are happy to pay the tariffs that make us waste less.
There are a number of people who did not take to the streets as we can see the bigger picture (unlike all those that protested) and again I we beleive in the government.
Dr Gonzi, two years down the line when all will be "ward u zaghar" I am sure that all those neigh sayers will look back and say "ahhh again he was right".
To back track now in my opinion would be detrimental to the economy and for the estimates of the coming years and it would prolong the hard times ahead (hard times due to global crisis). I also think that I would send a negative message to those like me who beleive in the governments planning and your vision.
Like most of the Maltese I save money for a rainy day, and I never leave for tomorrow what I can do today. This is the mentality that has to be instilled to understand the 2009 budget.

Dear Gonzi,Please note that not all citezens are wasting water and electricity. If this is the concept you're promoting (which i doubt vs taxation) then not everyone falls within the same category of "wasters". I believe whoever who is careful with own consumption then such persons should not be punished..and no one should contribute to Enemalta's losses....Thanks.

The PM had better realise that the population at large is at its wits end about these bills and the Social partners speaking to him today have the full backing of the total majority of this island four square behind them!!!
We are ready to pay higher bills only if these reflect the true price of this 'service" and not to finance the losses Enemalta has had to face in the recent past!!
The PM has an opportunity to redeem himself and his govt. out of the blind corner his Minister's pig-headedeness has drawn it into!! Though honestly the damage to the economy has already been done and the untold damage on the PN already well in place!!
If the PM insists on this flawed and arrogant way of doing things thousands of avid and dedicated Nationalists are determined to throw their vote away, vote AD or vote MLP come next June!!! And who blames them??

we are not only made to fork out the extra money to make good for enemalta wastages but we are also being crucified with financial burden of this year's budget deficit brought about by the government squandering before the general elections and the payroll effect of those some 900 political employments with government departments prior to these last elections.
let us not forget that while some of the increase in prices can be attributed to dearer commodities from overseas as i am writing oil is less than 60 dollars a barrel

The government is so predictable, even a toddler can anticipate his moves. Meeting all the unions at one go, and then privately meet the GRTU. What sort of comedy is this. The only reason is that since the GRTU treathened government to take him to the EU court, then he must try to persuade GRTU not to take such a step. That would be hard to accomplish with Tony screaming from one side and Gejtu from the other.

Could the Prime Minister tell the Unions and GRTU, during tomorrow's meetings, how will the govt charge us for October's W & E consumption? No meter reading was done on Oct 1!! Is this some sort of trick?

@ J. Borg
Did it ever crossed your mind that the Unions and the GRTU requested on their own initiative to meet the Prime Minister

How can anyone afford to waste even as they are today, has the PM forgot the 95% surcharge.
More of this and we all go to the dogs.

Some advice to Dr Gonzi: DO NOT TAKE Austin Gatt with you to the meeting as he irks the living souls out of those present. I wouldn't even take Minister Tonio Fenech or if he does attend ask him to keep his infinite wisdom to himself. Otherwise the meeting should result in some progress, as long as you take your social conscience with you.

Divide and rule
If the same topic is going to be discussed why isn't the Prime Minister going to meet all concerned together......
Why are the unions and GRTU going to meet separately.........or is this a manner in which things are prolonged......
Aren't all parties concerned part of the MCESD.......

I do not believe Dr Gonzi, when he says that if he lowers the price of W&E people start wasting electricity.
Why not tell us the truth Dr Gonzi and say that we are paying for the WASTAGEs of EneMalta?
And to balance the deficit.
