Police investigations into alleged over-purchase of equipment for the hospital's dentistry department have concluded that no laws were broken.

After looking into allegations of fraudulent procurement of dentistry equipment at Mater Dei Hospital, the Economic Crimes' Squad police found that they were unfounded, the police said. "Please note that from investigations made it did not result that there were any breaches of the law and hence no further police action is being taken," the police said in reply to questions.

It had been alleged that there had been abuses within the dentistry department as double the amount of dental chairs needed had been bought.

Other allegations concerned the unjustified purchase of highly sophisticated X-Ray machines and of equipment for dental cosmetic services when such surgery is not offered by the state hospital.

When, during the course of the investigations, police were asked to confirm who had been questioned, they said: "The names of any persons involved in this investigation cannot be divulged as it goes against the Data Protection Act."
