Children's rights game relaunched

A floor game aimed at making children aware of their rights was relaunched today by the Commissioner for Children, Carmen Zammit.

The game, addressed at children aged between three and five, was originally launched in 2005 by former commissioner Sonia Camilleri.

The new game, sponsored by Plasmon, is a floor puzzle consisting of 12 flash cards showing sad characters when rights are not respected, and the same characters clearly happy when their rights are respected.

The children have to pair the flash cards. Each flash card features a particular children’s right in both Maltese and English. The six rights depicted in the floor puzzle are:

- I have a right to have fun with my friends (Ghandi dritt li nifrah ma shabi)

- I have a right to learn (Ghandi dritt nitghallem)

- I have a right to play (Ghandi dritt nilghab)

- I have a right to be cared for (Ghandi dritt li jiehdu hsiebi)

- I have a right to a clean environment (Ghandi dritt li nghix f’arja nadifa)

- I have rights like everybody else (Ghandi dritt bhal kullhadd)

The floor puzzle was designed by Analiza Vella.

The relaunch was made by the commissioner at St Elmo Primary School in Valletta.

Oh sure! most girls want to be dancers or models and most boys want to be footballers or wrestlers!!!

While watching children playing in the ground next to my home seeing one child acting his dreams of becoming a pilot, other of becoming Diego Maradona. Other group playing Power Rangers. Some girls seems they are rehearsing some play they watch on our t.v stations. eh!...what fond memories they bring back.
Only in a playing field will you get a true glimpse of their imagination.
Chidren are blessed with a natural ability to believe in themselves and to imagine great accomplishments for their future lives.

Let's hope the children will have time to play it!

Every right has a corresponding duty.
So why teach them only their rights and not also their duties?
No wonder we have so much problems with the younger generations when they only learn their rights but not their duties.
Christine Galea (on 17/11/08)
They left one out - "I have duties as everybody else". We should teach children from a young age that yes they have rights but they also have duties.

"A floor game aimed at making children aware of their rights was relaunched today ........." How about a game aimed at making children aware of their duties. If one has rights one also has duties. This goes for every one children, youths, adults, pensioners......
