Abbé de Saint-Pierre commemoration

To mark the European Parliament's 50th anniversary and the 350th anniversary of the birth of Charles Irenée Castel de Saint-Pierre, better known as L'abbé de Saint-Pierre, a publication featuring a translation by Prof. Carmen Depasquale of Saint-Pierre's 1729 Abrégé will be launched on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Aula Magna, Old University Building, St Paul's Street, Valletta.

Throughout his life, Saint-Pierre wrote on a wide range of subjects. However, the one project closest to his heart and which he promoted with the greatest vigour was no doubt the 'Project for Perpetual Peace' and its abridged version, the Abrégé, written with the aim of establishing lasting peace in Europe. Saint-Pierre proposes the institution of a European assembly in a "city of peace".

The book, which is edited by Prof. Roderick Pace and supported by the Office of the European Parliament, Valletta, also features related articles by Prof. Pace and Prof. Depasquale and a preface by Prof. Peter van den Dungen, a lecturer in Peace Studies at the University of Bradford, UK. The project was also supported by the European Commission Representation in Malta.
