Xaghra primary is the first school in Gozo to be awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award under the EkoSkola Programme.

Malta coordinator Vince Attard said the school could now fly the prestigious Green Flag on their school as an international symbol that it reached the international level in environmental education criteria.

This is one of the programmes run by The Foundation for Environmental Education, an international organisation. This eco label is run in over 48 countries with over 5.5 million children participating in the Eco Schools international programme.

It was launched in Malta by Nature Trust (Malta), the Malta representative of FEE, in 2002, and the programme is now run in 94 schools in Malta and Gozo, making it one of the biggest and most successful environmental programmes in the Maltese Islands.

The award was earlier achieved by five schools in Malta.
