Youths urge more student involvment in NGOs
Comunio - an Mcast students' organisation active in the area of socio-spiritual initiatives - has urged local students, particularly those following post-secondary studies, to get to know more about what is available within the various local NGOs, to explore where they best fit in, to offer their important and significant share of commitment towards the great social good these organisations are already offering, but which could be even more abundantly effective with the input of more dedicated youth.
The youth organisation said that young people should better appreciate the important role they have in their educational institutions and eventually in their communities and within the country at large. Besides the time they dedicate to studies and other personal matters, young people need to appreciate even more the benefits arising from committing some of their time to the community they live in, the students said.
"Other young people around us need our care and assistance. Other members of the communities we live in, need our helping hand and attention. This can be done in a myriad of ways," Comunio said.
"Malta and Gozo can truly boast of a wealth of NGOs and voluntary work initiatives. However, such initiatives need to be given the necessary continuous support and commitment by us all - especially young people who would surely find such commitment a valid means of enhancing their personality and character formation. The saying 'it is in giving that we receive' is perhaps even more relevant today, than it was in the past," it contended.
Comunio urged other young people to place 'love, service and peace' as their motivation to commit some of their time to others around them, and consequently to society at large. For years, the students said, these words have steered forward Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta and her followers through all the difficult challenges they met in their sterling work.
"Kindling true and honest love around us, offering our time to the service of others and acting continuously with mutual respect and peace in mind, will surely help us breathe a better life as well as provide a better physical and social environment for all of us to live in," Communio said.
"We encourge young people to take notice of what goes around us as well as within the global village we live in. We cannot remain silent in front of social poverty and injustice. We need to be informed so that we can act by giving our contribution towards a better present and a brighter future," it advised.
