Canadians have submitted C$345 million ($285 million) in requests for tickets for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, organisers said.

The heavy demand means organisers will have to use a lottery to decide who actually gets tickets to many events, such as the gold medal men's ice hockey game.

Officials estimate that 120 of 170 competition sessions will be subject to lotteries because they received so many ticket requests.

Canadians had a five-week period in which to submit requests for tickets to the Winter Games. International ticket sales are handled separately.
