President to visit Cyprus

President Eddie Fenech Adami will be going to Cyprus tomorrow afternoon to attend an international meeting for peace “The Civilisation of Peace: Faiths and Churches in Dialogue” organised jointly by the Church of Cyprus and the Comunita’ Di Sant’Egidio in Nicosia.

The President was invited to Cyprus by the Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II and the Comunita’ Di Sant’Egidio. In the evening, he will be addressing the meeting's opening session and on Monday taking part in a panel discussion about xenophobia and philoxenia.

While in Cyprus, President Fenech Adami will be meeting his Cypriot counterpart Demetris Christofias and Archbishop Chrysostomos II, as well as former Cypriot Presidents Glafkos Clerides, George Vassiliou and Tassos Papadopoulos.

President Fenech Adami will return to Malta on Wednesday.

Perhaps the Community of Sant’Egidio may wish to discuss whether it would be appropriate for Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots to hand back the St. Sophia Cathedral - which is now the Selimiye Mosque - to the Catholic Church in Cyprus. Perhaps this Cathedral could be transformed and restored to its former grandeur! As the successor state of the Ottoman Empire, Turkey could really show its tolerance to different religions by practicing what it preaches. That would enhance its credentials for European Union membership.

By changing churches into mosques, a country does not leave a lot of room for freedom of worship, in my opinion.
