Trelleborg dismisses 25 workers
Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has dismissed 25 workers because of fewer orders after going on a four-day-week only some days ago.
The General Workers Union said in a statement that through its intervention, the company dismissed fewer workers than it intended.
Based at Ħal Far, Trelleborg has been suffering a continuing drop in its order-book and various measures to mitigate the situation were taken over the past few months. On October 17, all workers were put on a four-day week.
The management will be closely monitoring the order book situation with a view to returning to normal operations, the union said.
Trelleborg, formerly Dowty, produces O rings for the automotive market and employs nearly 600 people.
It exports its products to the US and Europe.

From your words one can directly notice that for ppl like you ( without any offence - of course ), the battle between the 'ordinary' teams - Nazzjonalisti u Laburisti is still the main concern.
Try and put the whole bubble behind these moves - some of which I really disagree about myself * logically, and you'll notice that there aren't much other options. I work with ppl from all over Europe and trust me, none of them are 'that' shocked with this situation as it's hitting most of the rest of the world! We - Malta do tend to take the other Party as the main cause of all the Country's problems.. Think we should take a trip to some other Countries then.
And ohhh again, it would be nice appreciating (Raphael stafrace's) comment as it's a very positive one for such a bad moment! Keep up the spirit in tight moments. Such small country should tighten up not argue about 'who's the bad boy' during these moments.
PS - I'm not a peacemaker and I have my doubt over loads of decisions over this budget, but I'm able to understand part of the whole problem.

@ John Borg
You seem to know better than the management on the future . So why don’t you do something yourself ?
No...you don’t do anything because your one of those that only wants to criticise and talk in vain , by doing so you damage the workers and the company .
The GWU secretary did everything to help all the workers still present at Trelleborg and the workers that faced redundancy . In fact he s trying to find them an alternative job .
Now who has to be ashamed ? You my friend because with your attitude you insult everyone that is passing from this hard time , YOU must be ashamed !!

Meta nisma' certi kummenti bhal "x'ghandu x'jaqsam il-Gvern" nidhak!!! Dazgur li ghandu x'jaqsam!! Illum qed nahsdu d-decizjonijiet hziena li hadu ta' qabilna, id-dejn tal-pajjiz, il-qghad u mitt elf hag'ohra. Nifhem li l-prezzjiet tad-dawl joghlew ghax is-sitwazzjoni hi kerha. Imma ta' l-inqas issa l-Prim Ministru jerga' jaghmel meeting fuq il-fosos u jghidilna kemm "il-finanzi huma fis-sod" u "xoghol, xoghol, xoghol" u "x-xoghol garantit" u PN il-“partit ta’ l-iva, flimkien kollox possibbli”. Qeghdin naraw kemm flimkien kollox possibli ghax kulhadd jitghaffeg. U l-kbir qatt ma jhossha, dejjem iz-zghir ihossha d-daqqa.
Araw x'qal Gonzi qabel l-elezzjoni min-Nazzjon 3 ta' Marzu 2008
Lawrence Gonzi semma li l-Partit Laburista jrid jaqta’ qalb kulħadd u qal li bil-PN fil-gvern ix-xogħol jiġri wara n-nies imma bil-Partit Laburista fil-gvern ikunu n-nies li jiġru wara x-xogħol...Gonzi fisser il-programm elettorali tal-PN bħala wieħed “frisk” u semma kif waqt li l-PN għandu l-aqwa ambizzjonijiet għall-pajjiż...Nsomma kollox biex titntrebah l-elezzjoni!!!

Of course, one thing leads to another, but this is a rotating effect of the world around us, the world's economy is not doing well and therefore ( of course ) Malta gets quite affected. But I still can't figure out why taking it at the Prime Minister??!! it's as if this person is the one making shifts for Trelleborg or the one asking foreign companies not to keep on importing more products form Malta!!
I completely understand the sad moment the country must go through but pls pls pls let's not point one finger to our Government 'only'. Look around you, watch some news and just look at all the companies that closed eg: Emirates losing 88%... they still have oil and the're still very rich but it affects them too very badly. I wish Labour would be on the top seat, just to have a 'possible' different solution, but not within 4 years.. TODAY!!!
@ M Aquilina - I hope this situation will be solved soon for everyone, and we're sad for all this, but pls learn from this and Blue, Red, Green or any other colour, guarantee is never assured!!!

This is only the beginning and more has to come. 25 laid off are not going to make up for the low order book and the increase in the electricity bill. The situation was convenient for the management to reduce the number of female inspectors and subcontract their work. As for the GWU secretary, he convinced no one that in one meeting he managed to get the number down from 120 to 25 and the terminal benefits he managed to achieve should make him ashamed of himself.

You know what, I wish most of you who write here defending the present Government would have done the same when there was a labour Government, but no then it was his fault...you are all honest, and fair....of that I am sure re your answers............

Of course the prim minister has to do with it, because he's always mentioning that we have our jobs guarantied and he's always mentioning that we have our financial s secured and a lot of bla bla bla....... but i think only in his world... not in the world we common people live....

Yes.
But according to the social partners the new electricity tariffs imposed by our government will increase the pressure and problems on our industry.

Don't you read the newspapers and other articles on internet. There is a worldwide financial crisis and when there is that, one of the first industries to do badly is the car industry. All over the world there has been less and less car sales. During October alone, for example, Mercedes has sold 18.3% less cars than the month before. If this factory is manufacturing items for the car industry, obviously it will have less orders than before.

I hope these workers will find a decent job as soon as possible as I know what it means to find yourself without a job - twice in a period of 12 months. They definitely need courage in these stressful times.
