Maltese opt for less packaging
Many Maltese are opting for products with less packaging in order to reduce the problem of waste, preliminary results of a survey commissioned by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority found.
70 percent of respondents said they sometimes purchased products with less packaging to reduce the problem of waste whilst 89 percent agreed or strongly agreed to restrict car use when air quality emissions exceeded health limits.
“These preliminary results provide us with important baseline information about public concerns and aspirations. This is crucial for Mepa due the importance of public participation involving all sectors and players of society, both in planning and environmental processes.” chairman Austin Walker said.
The survey was conducted by Mepa as part of its information gathering for the State of the Environment report.
A more accurate analysis of the results will be made soon, Mepa said.

To all concerned.
A survey is not the true story but a small part of a very large picture.
It is waste of time and money and does not prove to be useful and truthfull.
Don't be conned by these superfluous ideas.

@ S Rogers
Surveys are emant to be done to a small percentage of the population!!!! Otherwise they would be a referendum!!!!! The secret for an accurate survey is the random picking of the people chosen. If this is done scientifically, then the outcome of the survey would be very close to reality.

How can one opt for less packaging.
We buy Jacob's Muesli which used to be packed in a plastic bag.
Now apart from reducing the weight of the content, they are putting the contents in a plain plastic bag and also packed in a carion box.
How can one take care of the environment when certain companies do these things.
Care should be taken by companies whem designing containers for their products.

Can MEPA tell us how "many maltese" were surveyed? 100 people is one thing, 50,000 is another thing. Furthermore what are the demographics? Age bands? Localities?
How many people really take notice about the packaging when they buy something? Honestly? The first thing they think about is costings and saving a penny. Furthermore, who were these 89% in regards to car use? It is not a real reflection in regards to the number of cars on the road. It is the buses and heavy duty vehicles who emit dioxins and other pollutants into the air. MEPA please note!
There is a difference between hearing and listening to the public! If MEPA listens to the public, half the problems that have been occuring would be non-issues! Do I need to prepare a list for the Chairman?
