Stop-the-dust campaign
I refer to the report About Time Construction Dust Is Controlled - MEP (November 8) regarding my press conference last Friday on dust pollution allegedly caused by a construction plant in Naxxar.
Allow me to make the following clarification in order to avoid any misunderstanding.
The Times rightly reports that I "would be meeting with Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino to raise the issue of air pollution and the possibility of extending regulations that bind construction sites to cover also construction plants". In fact, I did just that later on Friday. Nevertheless, Minister Pullicino informed me that the responsibility with regards to control of dust from construction plants and the enforcement with regard to the regulations on the management of construction sites lies with the Malta Environment and Planning Authority. As a result, I will be redirecting this request to the relevant authorities.
I will continue to follow this issue closely to ensure that EU law on air quality is adequately enforced in the interest of residents in Naxxar and elsewhere in Malta and Gozo.

The quarries at San Pawl tat-targa are a main source of dust pollution. Dry conditions and a strong north westerly are what turn this locality into a nightmare for residents.
Has MEPA ever considered investigating the quality of the air we breathe.
If MEPA are responsible for covering construction plants, how do they intend covering both quarries below my residence?

No one informed the MEP that our PM is now in charge of the Environment? Is this a case of one hand does not know what the other is doing?
MEPA continuously bombards us with its air monitoring programs (an obvious smoke screen -pun intended - to cover its other deficiencies), how could this mistake have happened?
Seriously, has anyone ever seen the Marsa Powerstation spew more smoke then a volcano? Something has to be done about that as well.

How about M.E.P.A officials or who ever is involved never patrolls areas of Sliema, Gzira; Ta' Xbiex; and also Msida with the hundreds of building dust coming out from building that are being renovated or re-build causing out of them a lot of dust. Just to mention those in ta' Xbiex are in
Coast Road near the gzira gardens and near the Whitehall mention. In Gzira along The Strand and in Sliema along Tower Road. If an inspector of M.E.P.A. patrols these streets at different times he would surely find dust coming out.
