Labour publishes analysis of government's water and electricity rates proposal
The Labour Party has published a critical analysis of the government’s water and electricity tariffs proposal insisting this was equivalent to a surcharge of 194 per cent.
It said that the new tariff would mean an increase of €3.30 to €6.75 per family per week.
As a result, families would be forking out a total of €42 million for water and electricity. So the government would be taking back the Income Tax reductions and increases in Children’s Allowance it was giving.
Businesses, on the other hand, would have to fork out around €30 million more.
The Labour Party said that when the government came up with its final proposal, it failed to say what was the price of oil on which it had based its costings.

@ All
Ok, here is my much anticipated reply back to all.
In the published document there is nothing except for a summary of the budget presented by the government.
Sure, its the government job to take care of the country but how can anyone judge the governments actions without concretely comparing them with someone else?
Do you now realise that Muscat is trying to heat everyone up and then simply ride on the wave of everyones artificial anger to get their vote? Thats what I call a cheap campaign to get votes. And when you buy cheap you all know what happens....its like spitting in the sky!!!

@ Carmel Azzopardi
First off, you are wrong about me being a "PN guy". Unlike your obvious political allegiance, I have no affiliation with and owe no allegiance to any political party; I simply comment impartially about the situation.
You are also wrong in assuming that I did not follow the link provided above by the Times to the MLP's "critical analysis". What does this "critical analysis" provide? Little more than a series of statistical tables provided by KPMG and MITC and other tables derived from them that merely state the obvious. It is often said that "Figures lie and liars figure", meaning that anyone can use/abuse statistics for his/her own purposes, as appears to be the case in this “analysis”.
People might take Dr. Muscat and the MLP more seriously if he were to present his long-promised proposals to remedy the situation that are so conspicuously missing from his "critical analysis". If Dr. Muscat has any concrete viable proposals, as Leader of the Opposition, he is duty-bound to present them to the nation. If he does not, no amount of whinging and manipulation of statistics will remedy the situation.

Are you PN guys, are you serious?
There is a whole technical report full of calculations on the Labour website. Don’t tell me you started Joseph-bashing without even looking out for it?
Don’t tell me, G.Curmi, that you were so pleased with yourself, you did not do the research.

Wow! What an analysis! At best, one can only describe it as underwhelming and simplistic. Is this what you call a credible analysis Dr. Muscat? It took you and your advisers this long to come up with such lucid, detailed, and far-reaching conclusion? A Form 2 student would have done much better in far less time.
Where are your long-promised and much ballyhooed alternative proposals to remedy the situation Dr. Muscat? Is this the best that you can do? What a terremot! A seismometer sensitive enough to detect your terremot has yet to be invented.
If this is the best that you can offer, Malta simply cannot afford to have you as Prime Minister. Heaven help Malta if the electorate is ever naïve enough to allow you to form a government. Talk is cheap Dr. Muscat. Get serious will you please?

Where's the calculation of how Muscat came up with the 194% surcharge?
He cannot publish it cause its incorrect and will highlight the faults in its assumptions. This is the same story of when saying that the PN employed 600 new workers with the public sector, and when they state that the government spend Eur 70 million before election. The same when stating the project overruns. Just figures and no analysis to backup their calculations. Is-soltu bla bla bla... and no beef!!

Did Abela/Magro who wrote below see J Muscat's budget speech on Monday, I suggest they do before asking where are the suggestions. I can imagine you two stretching every penny to pay the new utility bills but having to smile so as to show that all is ok.

@ Karl & Vincent
1. The complete analysis can be found on the mlp website.
2. If you really wanted to listen to the MLP's proposals, you could have easily followed Dr. Muscat's parliament speech. May I remind you that for once, none of the PN or Goverment complained that no propososals were being made.

So our labour compatriots cannot afford 3.3 euros a week. So thats what all this fuss is all about? When the goverment tries to increase its income it is slaughtered, if the budget deficit is not reached it is slaughtered just the same.If funds are cut for this and for that just the same so the government cannot get it right. DO you remember the stop moaning of 1st May some five years ago? I think its time to stop moaning again.

Well done Joseph! the gonzipn/gatt are increasing the tariffs when the price of oil is less than 60 us dollars per barrel. However gonzipn/gatt are with their pants down because their hedging agreement price is more or less 110 us dollars per barrel!
they must follow the MLP advise and purchase oil at the current price so they will relief enemalta and balance some their mistakes and inefficiencies.

What did you expect the tariffs to be lower or higher ? For you these hikes might not be a "gran che" but for many pensioners, who are not rich, it might mean whether to light the heater or not! This, is no laughing matter,
