Elderly 'at risk of poverty'
The cost-of-living allowance is not enough to compensate for the increase in water and electricity bills, and unless the government gives compensation many people risk falling into poverty, according to the National Pensioners Association.
The association had proposed the minimum guaranteed pension be raised to 60 per cent of the National Median Income and the maximum be increased, but this proposal was not adopted.
Moreover, it had asked that pensioners over 80 be exempt from income tax.
Among other requests, it had also asked for the Hereditary Tax Law to be amended. To its dismay, the association noted that all these proposals had been ignored.

By the way, did The 'National' Pensioners Association. protest when Sant hiked the tariffs and introduced 33 taxes 11 years ago ? At that time fuel was one fifth it is today. Now we are paying according to buying price. Subsidies always benefit bumper consumers most.

When people protest they do not protest just for protesting, but because they have something to protest about. Re theatrics, I see that you are following your Gonzipn stance, but you both got your answer last Sunday and will get another answer next Friday. Speaking about theatrics how about the theatrics of the puliti women with chamber pots on their heads? Or how about promising one thing and doing another? Or taking the people for a ride by saying that we have finanzi fis-sod and as soon as the election has passed every imaginary problem seems to crop up? Those are what I call theatrics Karl.

@ Agius
Do not misquote my message. If at all, they should act on what the times newspaper reported in the below link with regards to the senior citizens. If the report is miscalculated then my argument is obviously eroneous.

@Galea
No, the electricity bill will not affect me much. Two years ago I installed a solar water heater for a mere Lm200 after government subsidy and I have the luxury of having 10 hot showers a day at no extra electricity cost. Furthermore, my house is equpped with AAA appliances, encouraged by the government subsidy. Also of noteworthy interest is that I have equpped my house with warm coloured energy saving lights. All in all, this practically reduced my current electricity bills to even less than what I used to pay in 2002 !!!!!
THIS is the message that the government wants to get through. CHANGE for the sake of saving money and saving the air that we breath. Unfortunately this message is misinterpreted by MuscatMLP and suited according to his needs. Nice try, not everyone will fall for his false propoganda except for those who wish to believe it. Their loss.

The NPA must then, according to Karl Abela, represent either a very greedy lot or a very stupid lot to have made the above protest. It would seem, according to KA that they are not able any more to add two and two together or even to read.
In my opinion they should react to his comment and confute the statistics he quotes. If they don't and they don't show up at the protest I will concede that they have proved him right. They can answer the questions I put earlier on today at a later date, after having carried out the necessary research.

@Galea, making reference to my way of life (which is absolutely foreign to you) does absolutely nothing to contribute to the argument. I dont blame you, because this quality of arguments is still very much the norm of how MuscatMLP does politics, hence the MLP supporters would only be too glad to adopt this substandard level of discussion. This is a pity because it seems that MuscatMLP does not want his people to understand such national issues. It was quite funny to see the people's faces full of expectation during last Sunday's Muscat speech. I have heard the speech word for word and struggled to squeeze a drop of substance from it. Muscat is afraid of taking the discussion on to a technical level because he knows that his argument will be lost immediately. To sum it up, MuscatMLP seriously lacks beef and tries to make up with some theatrics on stage.
As for the elderly issue, check the link below before talking. The report includes all pros and cons.

Are the pensioners not going to pay the tariffs besides the increased cost of living Karl?
You seem to be well-off (good luck to you) to be able to pay any bills and any increases which the Gonzipn Government imposes upon Maltese citizens, but others are not.

Can someone explain to me why the National Pensioners association is expected to be at the protest when it has been worked out by this very publication that the pensioners have fared better off with this budget?
Or is it a case the we believe only what we wish to believe just so that we can go out to protest?

But is the National Pensioners Association joining the protest march on Thursday? Does the NPA know how many of its members voted NP in the last election? And how many will still vote NP the next time round come what may? Moans will not help pay the new tariffs.
