Prof. Denis De Lucca of the University's International Institute for Baroque Studies presented a paper on the medieval-baroque transformation of Mdina after the 1693 earthquake at an international academic conference held recently in Noto, Sicily.
In his presentation, Prof. De Lucca focused attention on the rehabilitation of Mdina as a result of the benevolent patronage of Portuguese Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena (1722-1736).
De Vilhena used his military architect Mondion to inject new life into Mdina through a vast building programme of fortifications, churches and palaces, which provided many lessons for the more recent rehabilitation works carried out at Mdina.
The recent works included underground infrastructural services and the paving of the entire urban space and the drawing up of a masterplan to regulate future actions.
