The 60th anniversary of one of the worst sea tragedies involving Gozitans was marked with a ceremony last Sunday near Żewwieqa, Mġarr.

Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono and other personalities placed flowers at the foot of the victims' monument and archpriest Fr Paul Cardona then celebrated Mass on board a Gozo Channel vessel.

As a sign of respect, relatives and friends, including Paul Zammit who was one of the survivors, threw flowers and wreaths into the sea near Ħondoq ir-Rummien Bay. The incident happened on October 30, 1948, when, in spite of bad weather, a luzzu carrying 27 passengers tried to cross from Marfa to Gozo. However, the boat overturned and only four survived.
