We have read with some concern the well constructed and analytical article (November 3) written by Lino Spiteri regarding the annual results of the Bank of Valletta plc, which showed excellent intellectual research and was written in the main to the highest journalistic standards.

It is sad that Mr Spiteri had to demean himself and lower the quality of the article by referring to the failure of Lehman Bros. as "that Synagogue of American finance".

In circumstances where an international bank employing 24,000 people of all religious denominations worldwide for 150 years has failed, it is indeed to be regretted that Mr Spiteri allowed his natural talent to be overcome by his overt prejudice.
