What an ideal letter contributed by Frank Muscat concerning the PM's stand on divorce (November 6). But regrettably, we do not live in an ideal world! We live in a hypocritical world, full of double standards and incongruent behaviour by one and all! A world driven by insatiable greed, unbridled financial gain, and where pecuniary advantage is to be found and anything goes!
"The Maltese bishops and moral theologians have to date refrained from declaring their position on the issue of the role of the local Catholic politician on moral issues." I would very much like Mr Muscat to define "moral issues". And why single out divorce?
The Church radio itself promotes gambling relentlessly! "Ħa tieħu ċans?", it teases its religious listeners! Even a very "moral" programme hosted by a monsignor on Saturday mornings, is not spared!
Mr Muscat states that the PM's religion does "not allow him to support divorce". And yet it allows him to issue permits galore for all types of gambling sites on the internet, all registered in Malta! And there are many more other permits that are not so "morally" correct that are issued. I wonder what would happen if one were to apply for a permit to run a pornography company and with a site on the internet? What is the difference? Immorality does not have to be purely tied to where sex is concerned.
So where do we stand? What shall one do? Shall we turn Malta into a convent or a monastery? Hardly! I feel that the least we can do is be honest with ourselves, face facts and realities, and stop adopting the "holier than thou" attitude. And finally let us stop "throwing stones", as we know how Jesus handled that issue!
