Common sense budget
This year the government took the bold step to do away with "subsidies". In this new scenario taxpayers will be taxed "solely" on consumption. Furthermore, government revenue will go towards investing in national projects, job creation, health, education, the environment, etc.
Budget 2009 caters for several energy saving incentives and the environmental-friendly Budget 2009, dubbed the Green Budget, has been welcomed by all and sundry.
It is now up to each and every one of us to make an effort to support our environment and drastically reduce our energy consumption.

MS MARITA PACE ARE YOU LIVING IN MALTA?!!!!! OR ARE YOU DREAMING?!! Sorry Madam I have NOT WELCOMED this budget!
Electricity tariffs, Car licences, the lowering of the standard of living of Maltese, etc. etc. - what do you have to say about these?
After all the bad treatment meted against us, Minister Fenech further rubs salt into the wound when on yesterday's Xarabank he first conveniently referred to Car Licences in the lower bracket, and only when pressed on mentioned up to the 1800 cc bracket and saying that only Mercedes have engines with a 1900 cc engines upwards. Not true A small peugeot 206 has a 1900 cc engine. What does Mr. Minister have to say about this?!
IS THIS THE WAY THE MALTESE CITIZEN SHOULD BE TREATED?! SHAME! SHAME!

Dear Ms.Pace,
If you read the letter I sent today you will note very well that it is not less consumption is the main interest, as before one starts consuming (if I understood well) for a non commercial 3 phase meter one has to pay 420 euros instead of the previous 55.9. Is this related to consumption or have you got some wrong ideas too, like I hope I have.

I'm not sure you're following what's going on but if I recall everyone is criticising this budget especially the energy tariffs.
the opposition and gwu obviously criticised it like they would in all cases.
but so have the social partners, AD and AN, GRTU, UHM and loads of federations and organisations representing different parts of society.

If we were already economising to the extreme on our water and energy usage, kindly explain how we are supposed to "drastically reduce our energy consumption".

@ Ms Pace - Oh, really? Is that so?
Then, you are probably not one of so many thousands who see their income remaining the same, yet having to pay much heftier utilities bills, higher prices on fuel as well as being taxed for it, much, infinitely much higher licence fees for cars they cannot afford to change every so many years, yet manage to maintain very well, higher gas prices, whathave you!
You probably live on cloud 9, then!
Ok, let's reduce our energy consumption: stop watching tv, stop using the mixer, stop using electricity altogether and light candles instead.
And let's walk to work, in spite of the fact that I might be carrying things and that I don't have time to waste on an hour's journey by bus which can be made by a 10-minute drive - because you see, Ministers and their families make use of public-funded means of transport!
And the environment? Please, let's not speak about it.
