Maltese politicians congratulate Barack Obama
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi is confident that under the leadership of US President-Elect Barack Obama, the excellent relations between Malta and America will be further strengthened.
In a letter he sent to Senator Obama congratulating him on behalf of the government, Dr Gonzi said he looked forward to the further enhancement of the "warm ties of friendship" to the mutual benefit of both peoples.
George Vella, opposition spokesman for foreign affairs, said the fact that the son of an immigrant had been elected US President was proof of the country's democracy and the opportunities it offered.
Electing Mr Obama as the first African-American President was the realisation of Martin Luther King's dream and of those who worked to end racial discrimination in the US.
Throughout his electoral campaign, Mr Obama showed great organisational capabilities: He was calm and in control, knowledgeable, and a good listener who delivered his messages with persuasion.
Above all, he showed he believed in justice, charity and was ready to repair his predecessor's mistakes, Dr Vella said.

What you wrote about is not something new in America Politics. Once the Election is over and a new President is Elect, all Americans refer to the President Elect as My President regardless of their political stripes. This is the beauty of American.

"George Vella, opposition spokesman for foreign affairs, said the fact that the son of an immigrant..."
This is so very surprising. Barack Obama, Sr. entered the USA as a foreign student, and left the USA soon after graduating. He never went to the USA to live there permanently, and hence he was not an immigrant.
The new USA President-elect Barack Obama, Jr. is not the son of an immigrant! Please try and get it right.

Hope the new administration in Washington will change its policy regarding the issuing of tourists Visas to America. No reason why the Maltese should not be treated like most Europeans. It is ridiculous for many to pay a non refundable application fee to visit the USA while the citizens of many other countries are not even required to have a visa. I have a cousin who repeatedly was turned down and he absolutely would have returned to Gozo after the two weeks he planned to stay here. I am also hoping that the Bush appointee ambassador Mrs Bordanaro will also be replaced.

I presume that instead of 'government' you wanted to say 'political parties'. Both parties have lessons to learn.

Mr. Obama and Mr. McCain should be invited to Malta to teach the government how to behave and act as responsible politicians. The former united the people across gender, race, creed and political belief, while the latter showed how to lose gracefully and rally his supporters behind the new President-Elect
