The beginning of a new scholastic year is always a new experience for teachers and pupils alike. This year was no exception. Anthony Sammut, principal of St Nicholas College, which incorporates nine schools - seven at primary level, located at Attard, Baħrija, Dingli, Mġarr, Mtarfa, Rabat A and B, and two at secondary level, located at Mtarfa and Rabat - invited all members of staff to meet together on September 18.

The meeting took place at Mtarfa Boys' Secondary where Mass was celebrated by Mgr Lawrence Gatt, the outgoing director of Id-Dar tal-Providenza, together with Fr John Buhagiar, former chaplain of Mtarfa.

All the professional staff of the schools forming part of the college were present for this occasion. After Mass, Mr Sammut addressed the people present with a speech to welcome new members of the staff who were assigned duties within the college, while thanking those who left the college to perform their duties elsewhere. Among other things, he highlighted the need to join forces in order to provide higher quality education for all students. Mr Sammut also stressed the importance of the College network for the promotion of good practices and sharing of resources.

At the end of the speech, Mr Sammut presented Mgr Gatt with a cheque for €250 for Id-Dar tal-Providenza which was collected from all the schools within the college. Mgr Gatt praised this gesture of good will towards persons in need. Mr Sammut, together with Mgr Gatt and Fr Buhagiar, were presented with tokens of the event towards the end of the activity. Light refreshments were then served. During this time, the circa 300 members of staff from the various schools had the chance to mingle together and share their experiences and aspirations for the new scholastic year.
