Valletta 2008 player of the year
Rizzo best player in Division Two
Sliema McDonald's and Malta international Jonathan Valletta is the 2008 ASA Player of the Year, the fourth time to win the honour in his career.
The ASA issued a statement yesterday saying that Valletta was named the best player of the season following a Council Meeting held on Tuesday.
During the same meeting, it was also decided that the honour for best player in Division Two goes to Michael Rizzo of Exiles, winners of the league and cup double.
Previously, Valletta won the best player award in 1998, 2000 and 2005. On all three occasions he was a player of Sirens, the club with whom he started his waterpolo career before moving to Sliema a couple of years ago.
The last Sliema player before Valletta to win the award was John Soler in 2003.
Steve Camilleri, now playing in the Italian league, won the honour in 2007 for Neptunes.
Meanwhile, the ASA also said in its statement that the national waterpolo team, along with swimmers Ryan Gambin and Madeleine Scerri, have been nominated for the 2008 MOC Sports Awards.
