Del Piero double sinks Real

Giggs rescues Man. United as Arsenal fire blanks

Alessandro Del Piero scored two stunning goals to give Juventus a 2-0 win at Real Madrid yesterday and put the Italians through to the Champions League knockout stage.

Manchester United rescued a late point with a Ryan Giggs header in a 1-1 draw with Celtic in their Group E clash in Glasgow but Arsenal's hopes of securing an early place in the last 16 ended in frustration as Group G's bottom club Fenerbahce clung on for a 0-0 draw at the Emirates.

World Cup-winning striker Del Piero grabbed the opener in the 2-1 win over Real in Turin two weeks ago and repeated the feat after 17 minutes at the Bernabeu, crashing a left-foot shot past Iker Casillas as the defence backed off.

Del Piero's second came from a direct free-kick on 67 minutes which he whipped past the wall into the left-hand corner with Real keeper Casillas rooted to the spot.

With four matches played, Juventus top Group H on 10 points with Real Madrid second on six.

Zenit St Petersburg beat fellow Champions League debutants BATE Borisov 2-0 to stay in the hunt from the same group.

Russia striker Pavel Pogrebnyak fired the UEFA Cup holders ahead in the 34th minute and Portugal international Danny added the second to seal Zenit's first victory in the competition in the last minute of added time.

BATE piled up the pressure after the break but the visitors, who had French defender Sebastien Puygrenier sent off for a second yellow card on 73 minutes, held firm to move off the bottom with four points from four games.

Scott McDonald lobbed an exquisite opener for Celtic's first goal in the group after 13 minutes when he fastened onto a headed knockdown by Gary Caldwell and left United goalkeeper Ben Foster stranded from 14 metres.

Celtic's defence appeared to be holding firm during a second half onslaught from the English champions until six minutes from the end when Cristiano Ronaldo forced a fine save from Artur Boruc with a shot from 25 metres but Giggs was on hand to head home the loose ball.

Man. United and Villarreal, who drew 2-2 at AaB Aalborg, top the group on eight points.

A free-kick from Anders Due gave Aalborg a late draw last night and kept alive the Danish champions' slim hopes of advancing from Group E.

With new manager Allan Kuhn at the helm, Aalborg searched feverishly for their first group victory but Villarreal struck first through Giuseppe Rossi in the 41st minute.

Jeppe Curth levelled the score after a nifty back heel pass from Caca in the 54th minute, only for substitute Guille Franco to put Villarreal ahead again in the 75th minute.

Due then blasted a free-kick in the top corner in the 81st minute, giving Aalborg their second point in the group.

Arsenal failed to turn their domination into goals with Fenerbahce's goalkeeper Volkan Demirel and some last-ditch defending keeping the home side out.

Robin van Persie came close on several occasions for Arsenal with one first-half effort clipping the bar.

Turkey's Fenerbahce showed little desire to go forward, although the draw keeps their slender chance of reaching the knockout round hanging by a thread.

Arsenal remain top with two matches left.

Borowski equaliser

Tim Borowski scored a late goal to earn Bayern Munich a 1-1 draw at Fiorentina and put the Germans on the brink of the last 16.

The unmarked midfielder controlled a Franck Ribery cross from the left and tapped in 12 minutes from time to give the Germans a barely deserved share of the spoils.

Romania Adrian Mutu had volleyed the home side in front in the 11th minute after Alberto Gilardino glanced on Luciano Zauri's ball from deep.

Bayern have eight points from four games and share the lead of Group F with Olympique Lyon, who beat Steaua Bucharest 2-0, while Fiorentina are five points behind in third with slender hope of going though.

Seven-times French champions Lyon, who had recovered from two goals down for a thrilling 5-3 win at Steaua two weeks ago, did it the easy way this time thanks to a Juninho free-kick just before the break and a late Anthony Reveillere effort.

Lyon, who had started their Group F campaign with draws against Fiorentina and Bayern, are now ideally placed to advance to the knockout stages.

Steaua, whose coach Marius Lacatus was sacked and replaced by Dorinel Munteanu after the defeat by Lyon in the first leg, clearly came looking for a draw and showed little initiative.
