Vucinic strikes twice as Roma stun Chelsea

Barca, Sporting in last 16

Mirko Vucinic scored twice as Roma recorded a surprise 3-1 win over last season's runners-up Chelsea in the Champions League yesterday.

Liverpool and Inter also struggled as they needed late goals to earn a point against Atletico Madrid and Anorthosis Famagusta while Barcelona and Sporting Lisbon became the first two teams to reach the last 16.

In Rome, former Chelsea defender Christian Panucci tapped in the first from close range on 34 minutes and Montenegro striker Vucinic struck twice at the start of the second half to make sure Roma ended a run of five consecutive defeats.

Chelsea pulled one back through John Terry in the 75th and had Deco sent off for a second yellow card.

The Londoners stay top of Group A with seven points from four games, one ahead of Roma and Girondins Bordeaux.

The French side boosted their qualifying hopes with a 2-1 victory at CFR Cluj. Yoann Gourcuff put the French team in front after six minutes before Dani headed Cluj level.

Brazilian Wendel restored Bordeaux's lead from a 19-metre free kick in the 38th minute.

Barcelona were surprisingly held by Basel 1-1 at the Nou Camp but it was still enough to put them through to the next stage.

Lionel Messi put the Catalans ahead after 62 minutes but Eren Derdiyok earned the Swiss side a point on 82 minutes.

Sporting were the other team to qualify from Group C after a nervy 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk.

After a lacklustre first half with few chances for both teams, Sporting broke the deadlock when veteran Brazilian striker Derlei converted a cross from the Russian midfielder Marat Izmailov after 73 minutes. Shakhtar's Olexandr Kucher was sent off in stoppage time.

Striker Julio Cruz headed in 10 minutes from time to spare defender Nicolas Burdisso's blushes and give Inter a 3-3 draw at Anorthosis Famagusta.

A win would have put the Serie A champions through but instead the group leaders contrived to present the hosts with all three goals.

Mario Balotelli and Marco Materazzi twice put Inter ahead in the first half but poor headers from Burdisso and Esteban Cambiasso allowed Cedric Bardon and Georgios Panagi to twice equalise.

Burdisso then got in another muddle with a header and Nikolaos Frousos fired home five minutes after the break before Inter levelled.

Steven Gerrard scored a controversial penalty deep into injury time to earn Liverpool a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in Group D.

The Liverpool captain converted from the spot after he was challenged in the box and Swedish referee Martin Hansson awarded a debatable penalty kick.

The Spanish side had thought Maxi Rodriguez's superbly taken 37th minute strike was enough to book their place in the knock-out stages of the competition.

Both teams, who are five points clear at the top of the group, must now wait for their next games to confirm their progression to the next round.
