The Nationalist Party today congratulated Barack Obama on his US presidential election victory.
It said that it hoped the US would continue the fight against international terrorism under the Obama administration but said that military intervention should be ‘ethical’.
It augured that the allies’ military presence in Iraq would be successfully concluded when Iraqi forces could take over.
Furthermore, the international community should work to ensure that oppression and dictatorship in other parts of the world were replaced by justice, freedom and respect for human life and international law.
The party urged the US to remove the death penalty and expressed reservations over practices at Guantanamo Bay.
The PN augured that the Obama presidency would quickly give a boost to the international economy.
It also pointed out that Malta-US relations improved substantially under the Bush administration. The highlights included the signing of a double taxation agreement, Malta’s inclusion in the visa waiver programme, assistance to Malta Customs and assistance over immigration. It hoped that relations would be further strengthened over the coming years.
