The budget will be allocating €2 million for the restoration of pre-1950 residences.

Preference will be given to listed buildings in town and village cores.

The government's financial support to local councils is to go up by €4.2 million in a bid to have more sustainable localities.

For the first time, retailers who spend more than €10,000 to upgrade their business will benefit from tax credits for two years.

The government also intends to introduce two pilot projects drawing up strategies for sustainable development on local levels. A sum of €100,000 will go to finance the Local Council Green Challenge Award and a similar amount to the Local Councils Enterprise Support Award Scheme.

Local voluntary organisations will be refunded the 15.25 per cent VAT they pay on expenditure.
