During my eight nights stay at Mater Dei Hospital I was a victim of the disservice that Melita company is offering the patients there. It literally kicks the patients as they lie supine.
I purchased the service for five days. The first part of the horrible service was the blotches that appeared on the screen when watching TV. These start appearing every now and then increasing gradually till they take over the whole screen with total loss of sound. I rang up the operator and was told to change the plug from one socket to another. I informed them that in my state of health that would have been disastrous. They attended to the problem an hour later and worked for a solution on a trial and error basis. I expected them to dampen the plug points with spit. This problem occurred daily.
Then as an EU citizen I was given a kick in my chin when I tried to read my e-mail. I could not read it because my server is the Go company. I complained there and then and was told brusquely that Go was their competitor and consequently my e-mail could not be reached. So I was in my hospital and was withheld by a company using my hospital from accessing my e-mail. This is unacceptable in a democratic country.
I contacted the regulator and made a verbal complaint. These contacted back and promised to look into the matter. I could not even make use of WiFi because the system was blocked. I did not mind that I was crippled by nature. Doctors cured that. To be intellectually choked by a company fleecing its customers at €4 a day for the minimal service is unacceptable. To watch the sports channels costs you €8 a day. At times you could get an air ticket to London at a cheaper rate. I was simply disgusted by the pure abuse of this monopoly in a public institution. Is there a solution?
