Strong increase in funds for illegal migration

The financial allocation for "third country nationals" (immigrants) under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Justice is to rise to €5 million next year from €932,000 this year, the financial estimates show.

The estimates were published with the budget speech yesterday.

A spokesman for the ministry said some of the funds will go for the recruitment of personnel but major refurbishment of Lyster Barracks detention centre is also planned.

Some of these funds previously used to appear under the estimates of the Ministry of Social Policy. The amount also includes the allocation to the AFM.

Had those 5 million euro be distributed amongst us Maltese, we would all be better prepared to face the international crises in economy and oil prices, don't you all think? Instead, such a huge amount of money, deriving from the taxes WE Maltese see withheld monthly from our salary will go to those who entered here illegally! Is the Minister expecting us to be proud of his (or our) generosity or what?!

Of course! refurbish their centres... increase their amount so that next summer more will come and will have a comfortable, welcoming place where to stay while we Maltese pay our taxes and have petrol prices and electricity bills rise in price. The immigrants enter here illegally and act like Malta is theirs. After all, I do not blame them! I blame the government . It sees to their interests and needs more than it sees to ours.

Wonders never cease! Once again our government is caving in to pressure and the need to appease the UNHCR, Amnesty International, other EU countries, and even our neighbours to our south by 'raising the standard of accomodation' for illegal immigrants. Our Home Affairs Minister naively proclaimed that the US accepting illegal immigrants from Malta would not encourage others to come our way. There was such an overwhelming 'response' to the US initiative, that the US had to suspend the program due to fraudulent applications being submitted. Instead of a policy of 'accomodation', Malta should adopt a policy of 'PREVENTION'! Will we ever, ever, learn?

@ D. Borg.... Well Said Sir... I Agree With You 100%....

BESIDES these 5 Million Euro, these ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, have every other thing paid for by ALL OF US TAXPAYERS TOO.

AS IF THE NEW UTILITY RATES ARE NOT ENOUGH OF A BURDEN WE ALSO HAVE TO CONTEND WITH PROVIDING LUXURY FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.

Prosit Gonzi.

Illegal immigrants got the best deal in the budget.

Shame on you ask for asking the Maltese to understand the international situation.

This is where the goverment is investing money .... instead of in your wallet !!!
E. Azzopardi (on 4/11/08)
I thought that we have just signed this famous agreement with the EU and that next year they will be helping us by taking most of them and we have should only have 100 of them here!!
The way we are going it is not far off before we have a ministry in charge of this!!!
deb bugeja (on 4/11/08)
oh yes welcome them on our sacred island....
d. borg (on 4/11/08)
It seems that the illegal immigrants got the best deal in this budget. Better to distribute this sum among Maltese needy families instead of encouraging them to keep on coming!! When are we going to see them leave our country??
AFabri (on 4/11/08)
Actually I thought that funds will be coming from UE, UN or Libya.....not from our pockets!!

Instead of repatriating illegal immigrants.......Govt. will be putting a nice advert in preparation for next summer .... refurbishment of sites, free meals, free telephony, pocket money and all tax free services.
Thanks Mr. Minister for your contribution to this mess.......viva d deficit.
l Galea (on 4/11/08)
THESE FUNDS MUST NOT BE USED TO REFURBISH THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS CENTRES, BUT TO REPATRIATE THEM.
Joe Borg (on 4/11/08)
maltese people, sons of st. paul, lets share the burden...
