Tax breaks for mothers
Mothers who had a child since 2007 and have returned to work are to be given an income tax exemption of one year, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said in the budget speech today.
He added that mothers who had been out and returned to work within five years would get an income tax refund of one year for every child under 16 as promised in the PN electoral programme.

Dr gonzi please note that not all mothers have carreers, most have jobs. And there is a big difference ! We have come in a situation that mothers cannot afford to stay home nor work part time because the expences are too high. When I hear you talk it seems that all women want to go out and work but I can assure you that it's not true! Above all this......we have to pay the same percentage tax as our husbands and other people that have no kids and are single.

And what about all the child care centres which became one of the most important initiatives during Labour's 96-98, the same priorities which were turned down by the Nationalists.
Is Gonzi going to continue mixing kindergarten with child care centres for children below three years in order to make the problem look smaller????

Why is it that these politicians are so obsessed with wanting women to go to work?
As if they do not have enough work at home!
Women should consider whether it is worth going out to work when you have to pay the national insurance contribution, income tax at a higher level due to increased income, paying for children at child care centres etc. What will you be left with out of your wages?
However, women should be provided with every opportunity if they want to work, but not forced to because they cannot meet the family expenses due to their husbands low wages and taxes upon taxes which the Gonzipn Government has been imposing year in year out.

What happened to the help promised to mothers who are unable to go to work and have to stay home to look after children (especially disabled ones)?

And what about investment in child care centres? How many thousands were spent on the Hal Far industrial estate childcare facility built by the government - which has been left derelict 8 months after the election.
