Unemployed people who have been registering for work for more than five years will have to start doing community work for 30 hours per week and their social assistance will increased to 75 per cent of the national minimum wage, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said int he budget speech this evening. The scheme does not apply for those following a training course.

The minister said this measure did justice with society which was paying unemployment benefits through its taxes. It was hoped that the scheme would make it harder for people to register for employment and get benefits and work illegally at the same time.
